Qatar Airways (QR), the leading Gulf carrier, is preparing to launch a new long-haul route connecting Doha (DOH) and Bogota (BOG) with a technical stop in Caracas (CCS). The twice-weekly service will utilize the airline’s advanced fleet of Airbus A350-1000s and Boeing 777-300ERs, reinforcing growing diplomatic and economic ties between Qatar and Colombia.
Strategic Stop in Caracas
The technical stop in Caracas addresses operational challenges posed by Bogota’s high-altitude airport, which limits payload capacity for direct long-haul flights. Caracas’ lower-altitude location allows full-capacity operations without compromising range or efficiency. Notably, the detour adds just five miles to the total journey distance.
Colombia’s Aeronáutica Civil confirmed the airline’s application on social media, stating:
“Colombia and Qatar are moving forward to make an air route between the two countries a reality! Qatar Airways requested authorization to operate the route: Doha – Bogotá – Caracas (technical stop) – Doha, with two weekly frequencies using Boeing B777-300ER and Airbus A350-1000 aircraft.”
Key Route Details
- Doha-Bogota Distance: 8,261 miles
- Return Leg: 636-mile Bogota-Caracas segment, followed by a 7,630-mile stretch to Doha
- Aircraft: Boeing 777-300ERs and Airbus A350-1000s
While the Doha-Bogota route is among Qatar Airways’ longest, it remains just shy of its longest service to Auckland, New Zealand, at over 9,000 miles.
